Modern Warfare 4 beta testing highlights weapon balance issues, controller aim assist concerns, and netcode problems that Infinity Ward must address before launch.

Modern Warfare 4's August 2026 beta has barely been live for a weekend, yet players have already settled on the same complaint: fights can end before they seem to begin. Anyone spending time in MW4 Bot Lobbies to learn routes and weapon handling will notice it quickly. In regular 6v6 matches, the pace feels closer to 2022's Modern Warfare 2 than Black Ops 7. The ISO Nightshade was a big reason for that during the opening days, especially in tight rooms and narrow lanes.

The early close-range problem

The Nightshade has since received a serious reduction in power. It now needs five shots rather than four in many close encounters, and that one extra bullet changes the feel of the weapon. It still works well when you get the jump on someone, but it no longer wipes out every other SMG option. Assault rifles tell a slightly messier story. Burst rifles can erase an opponent in one clean burst, so they distort the numbers. Take those out, and close-range rifle fights remain quick, while shots at distance take more time and feel more like recent Black Ops games.

First-weekend weapon picture

Class | Close-range feel | Long-range feel
Assault rifles | Fast, near MW2 | Slower, closer to Black Ops 7
SMGs | Limited sample after Nightshade changes | More data needed
LMGs | Similar to Black Ops 7 | Closer to MW2.

Why controller users and mouse players see it differently

Aim assist is driving plenty of the debate. On a controller, it feels much nearer to Modern Warfare 2's system than the softer approach used in Black Ops 7. That matters when targets move across a doorway or disappear behind smoke for a split second. Controller tracking can stay connected through visual clutter, while mouse-and-keyboard players have to read what's actually on screen. Right now, that screen can be a mess. Weapon movement, recoil shake, explosion smoke, and dust from bullet impacts all get in the way. You miss one visual cue, and the fight's gone.

The server side still needs work

There's another issue that makes every fast death feel worse: desync. A player may swear they took two rounds, then watch the killcam and see four or five shots fired. That gap damages confidence in the gunfight, even where weapon data looks reasonable. A few sessions in Bot Lobbies MW4 can help players test recoil without match pressure, but it won't solve network inconsistency. Cleaner visuals, steadier server response, and a modest aim-assist adjustment would give the October 23 release a much fairer rhythm.
