Heaviest Stick Insect Discovered in Australia
Australian scientists have discovered a new species of stick insect in a remote rainforest, believed to be the heaviest in the country. Weighing 44 grams and measuring 40 cm, the Acrophylla alta's large size is thought to be an adaptation to its cool, wet habitat. Its remote, high-altitude location likely contributed to its late discovery. The insect's unique eggs also aided in its identification as a new species. Two specimens are now part of the Queensland Museum's collection.
