Physics is basically an attempt at understanding the world and how it works. It is also the subject that gave me a hard time the moment I stepped into form one. You see our Physics teacher made it sound like a piece of cake, or so he thought. I remember him saying, “You will learn about matter and energy and be fascinated by their interactions, which occur on all scales, from the tiniest particles inside the atomic nucleus to the forces that give rise to the structure of the universe…” I didn’t quite grasp the rest, and I was never fascinated, so I had to pave way for those who were some two years later. But that’s a story for another day. For today, B.Sc Physics is our Course of the Week.
Physics, adapted from the Ancient Greek; phusikḗ denotes ‘knowledge of nature’ and is the natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion and behavior through space and time, along with related concepts such as energy and force, all geared towards understanding how the universe works. The Bachelors of Science in Physics is offered in the University’s Department of Physics , in the College of Pure and Applied Sciences at the Juja Main Campus.
The course takes four years and is offered on a full time basis. Should you choose to take this adventurous and fulfilling path, you shall interact with various concepts and areas such as Special Relativity and Cosmology, Quantum Physics, Statistical Physics, Electromagnetism, Biophysics, Thermal Physics, Classical mechanics among many others.
A candidate wishing to be admitted into the Bachelor of Science Physics degree programme must satisfy the minimum University entry requirements. In addition, the candidate must have obtained a minimum aggregate Mean grade C+, Chemistry C+, or Physical Science or any two of the following; Biology C-, Math C- Physics C-
Graduates with a major in Physics can pursue career paths in multiple research and development areas including astrophysics, medical physics, meteorology, mining, scientific instrumentation, data analysis, IT consultancy, optical engineering, synchrotron science, vision sciences just to mention a few.
Graduates can also consider working in a number of commercial roles in telecommunications, government departments, management consultancies, science museums, teaching and video gaming industry.
Should you decide to further your studies beyond the undergraduate level, the Department of Physics still has you covered. The thematic areas of specialization in Masters and Doctorate are Solid State Physics, Electronics Microprocessor Applications, Applied Geophysics, Polymer Physics, Laser Optics, Renewable Energy, Condensed Matter Physics, Nuclear Physics and Radiation Physics.
