The journey to Alpather Lake begins in Gulmarg, a well-known hill station in Kashmir.

Located in Kashmir, Alpather Lake is often called the "Frozen Lake." This serene lake remains frozen from November until mid-June, thereby earning this nickname. Located at the base of the Apharwat Peaks, Alpather Lake offers an easy one-day trek from Gulmarg.

With amazing landscapes, as you will soon see by reading this blog, and a peaceful environment, it's perfect for nature lovers. People who have visited there say it reminds them of Lake Louise but with fewer crowds. Visitors can also explore nearby villages and learn more about local culture.

How to Get There

The journey to Alpather Lake begins in Gulmarg, a well-known hill station in Kashmir. The most convenient way to reach Gulmarg is by taking a direct flight from Delhi to Srinagar, followed by a private cab ride to Gulmarg. The fare for a cab ranges from ₹1,800 to ₹2,000. Alternatively, more budget-conscious travellers can opt for a shared taxi, which costs around ₹100 to Tanmarg. From there, another shared cab can take you the rest of the way to Gulmarg for an additional ₹50-70.

Once you arrive in Gulmarg, you’ll see that there are several accommodation options available, including The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa, which offers a luxurious stay for ₹23,800 per night (including breakfast), or something more affordable like Heevan Retreat at ₹7,125 per night (including breakfast). These spots allow you to recharge before embarking on your adventure.

Trek Difficulty: Is this trek for Everyone?

Alpather Lake is a moderately difficult trek. The high-altitude climb can be tough, but the rewards are absolutely worth it. Try visiting during the summer months, and you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and lush meadows stretching across the valley. Those with a basic level of fitness can manage this trek by pacing themselves, taking breaks, and staying hydrated along the way.

Go Solo or Hire a Guide?

Now, you must be wondering if it’s possible for you to trek to Alpather Lake on your own. Keep in mind that this is a high-altitude journey, so it's essential to take your time and avoid overexertion. Hence, if you’re a confident hiker, you can definitely go for it solo.

Just remember to carry enough water and move at a comfortable pace. And for those who are less familiar with high-altitude trekking, go ahead and hire a guide for extra peace of mind.

Best Time to Visit

Alpather Lake offers enchanting experiences throughout the year. If you're eager to see the lake frozen, plan your trip between November and mid-June. The frozen surface and snowy surroundings make for an unforgettable winter scene, perfect for those who dream of walking on ice.

From June to September, as the snow melts, the area transforms into a vibrant meadow filled with blooming flowers and warm sunshine. This is the ideal time for those who prefer milder weather and lush, green landscapes.

The Trek Route

The trek can easily be completed in a day. Starting from Gulmarg, the trail takes you through Khilanmarg, then up to the Apharwat Ridge, before reaching Alpather Lake at the foot of the twin Apharwat Peaks. The total distance is approximately 13km from Gulmarg, making it a full day of hiking.

For those looking for a shorter trek, you can cut down the distance by taking the Gondola ride to Mount Apharwat's Phase II, which reduces the hike to about 1.5km. And if you’re feeling tired after the long trek, you can always opt for a pony ride back to Gulmarg.
